The New York City Law Department is seeking Discovery Management Attorneys in the Litigation Support Division. The Law Department is one of the largest law offices in New York City and one of the largest public law offices in the country. The Department’s 730 lawyers handle more than 80,000 cases and transactions each year. The Department’s attorneys represent the City on a vast array of civil litigation and in the criminal prosecution of juveniles. The Department also counsels the Mayor, elected officials, the City and all its agencies.

Discovery Management Attorneys interact with other Assistant Corporation Counsels, paralegals, and staff to assist with document production for the assigned Agency. They also assist in the supervision of staff conducting paper and electronic discovery for document production. Discovery Management Attorneys also become familiar with the assigned Agency’s IT systems and management in order to assist with the collection of electronically stored information.

The Discovery Management Attorney will work on-site at the assigned Agency.

Minimum Qualifications:
– J.D. from an ABA accredited law school and admitted to practice in New York State.
– At least four years of litigation and discovery experience.
– Strong organizational and writing skills.
– Strong communication skills including the ability to interact with and develop collaborative relationships with both Law Department and Agency personnel.

Preferred Skills:
– Prior supervisory experience.
– Understanding of and exposure to litigation involving the exchange of paper and electronic discovery.
– Hands on experience and strong technical skills with the following applications: Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, Access and PowerPoint); Adobe Acrobat; document management systems (e.g. Autonomy’s Worksite), and Microsoft SharePoint.
– Use of and/or familiarity with litigation support review.

The NYC Law Department is now accepting applications for the role of Central Deputy Chief of Trials for the Tort Division of the Law Department. The overarching responsibility of the Tort Division’s new Central Deputy Division Chief for Trials is to enhance the Division’s trial preparation at all levels, from investigation and discovery to strengthening trial techniques and litigation strategies.  In conjunction with the  Borough Chiefs, the Central Deputy Division Chief for Trials will provide oversight of and support for the Deputy Borough Chiefs for Trials by, among other things, reviewing priorities and the allocation of resources and providing guidance on trial preparation and strategy.  The Central Deputy Division Chief for Trials will conduct a  critical analysis of the current practices in each Tort Borough office, the Tort Division’s Special Litigation Unit, and the Tort Division’s Toxic and Mass Tort Unit, with a view to maximizing the effectiveness of current resources and recommending proposals for reorganization as necessary to more effectively meet the challenges of adequately preparing Tort Division cases for trial.  The Central Deputy Division Chief for Trials will also be responsible for creating training programs for trial attorneys, collaborating with the Professional Development Division as necessary; developing training for and use of technology at trials; developing training in targeted areas of law, such as recurring evidentiary and related issues under the CPLR and GOL 15-108; creating and managing trial preparation tools such as the Expert Databank, Damages notebook, jury charge bank, and verdict sheet bank. In addition, the Central Deputy Division Chief for Trials will assist the Division Chief in the evaluation and settlement of high-exposure cases and other central management tasks as needed.

Minimum Qualifications: Substantial legal experience; substantial  trial experience, preferably in the area of tort law; demonstrated exceptional managerial and supervisory abilities; strong analytical skills and a solid knowledge of municipal tort law, the CPLR, and evidentiary issues; strong negotiation skills; familiarity with settlement values of various personal injuries; excellent judgment; excellent interpersonal skills.
